WHY IS SEO IMPORTANT? WHAT IS SEO?
SEO stands for "Search Engine Optimization."
In short - optimizing for search engines includes:
• SEARCH ENGINE FINDABLE ELEMENTS on your site
• APPEARANCE OF SEARCH RESULTS in search engine listings
• APPEARANCE OF LINK POSTS on social media (of content from your site)
• APPEARANCE IN BROWSER TAB when someone is on your site
• HOVER INFORMATION of elements of your site
Let's break down what each of these means and how to achieve successful SEO on your website...
SEARCH ENGINE FINDABLE ELEMENTS
Your website is "search friendly" when the copy (text) on your site plays really nicely with the imagery content and backend tagging, page SEO information, META data, links in and out are relevant, and overall site SEO information has been applied. The steps to doing this well and thoroughly include: (1) ASSESSMENT of the company, what its offerings are, and what its audience is looking for when they type terms into a search engine (2) IMPLEMENTATION of keywords and key phrases in coding and naming (3) ACCURATE VARIETY The bots can spot click bait so you want to avoid being really repetitive with phrasing and keyword placement. The bots are looking for AUTHENTIC (everyone's favorite internet word!) results. You want the SEO work to be natural for your company, products, and the content on the site overall and on each page.
APPEARANCE OF SEARCH RESULTS
Above is an example of a search engine result. The title and visible blurb are controllable. It looks most professional when it's simple, at-a-glance easy to read, and doesn't get cut off (oops - Target only nailed this on one out of six showing site page categories!). Also controllable is much of what is in featured in your Google side box as far as information and photography (claim your business on Google!).
APPEARANCE OF LINK POSTS
When you paste a URL into, say, a LinkedIn or Facebook post, for example, lovageinc.com/work, the platform populates the post with a photo and blurb. And... you guessed it! That content is customizable. For each page on your website, for each blog post, for each item you are selling.
APPEARANCE IN BROWSER TAB
If you look in your browser (right now!) you will notice the little Lovage icon graphic in the browser tab and the words displayed next to it. The icon is called a "favicon" and appears for your site in browser tab display. The "page name" is also customizable for each page on your website.
HOVER INFORMATION
Have you ever lingered your mouse somewhere on a website and seen information pop up? A professional website's hover over a photo or graphic will have a Tooltip. See above example circled in yellow, on our own site. Without that touch there may be no information or the file name might appear. "IMG_09473.jpg" just doesn't have the same feel as a professionally labeled site element. Ain't nobody got time for that!
These SEO details are about offering a cohesive and professional experience. It is also "set it and forget it" refinement for your marketing. Every time someone searches, posts, or engages with your site, in some way, you are controlling the messaging and communication!
